Technology overview

Early detection of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in patient samples is crucial for isolating people at risk of transmitting the virus, even when they don’t show any symptoms.

A technique called RT-PCR is the current gold standard for Covid-19, and works by detecting the RNA genetic information of the virus. The RT-PCR requires equipped laboratories and specialist personnel, and the samples often need to be taken to central facilities for analysis. This means higher costs and longer times to get the results. The CORONADX project, will develop three alternative, rapid and affordable systems to detect the new coronavirus. They don’t require samples to be sent to a laboratory, and can be operated with minimal or no training.
